SoTL as A Career Priority

Huber, Mary Taylor. Balancing Acts: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Academic Careers. Washington, DC: The American Association for Higher Education and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 2005.

Huber draws on the experiences of four educators whose work has been pioneering in SoTL to suggest how faculty might seek to integrate SoTL into their academic careers. She offers lessons from their efforts at integrating the aspects of their careers, and provides issues and ideas for further examination.

Hutchings, Pat, ed. “Approaching the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.” In Opening Lines: Approaches to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Menlo Park, CA: The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 2000. 1-10.

This is an introduction to SoTL work conducted by Carnegie Scholars working with CASTL—cases of which are provided in Opening Lines and the book’s accompanying CD-ROM. It provides a helpful overview of reasons for engaging in SoTL as well as the kinds of questions and priorities that characterize such work.
