What is SoTL: Engaging in Pedagogical Research

http://mypage.iusb.edu/~gmetteta/Research_about_Teaching_and.htm

This is a resource designed for teachers wanting to conduct research about teaching and learning. It includes step-by-step suggestions for getting started as well as links to additional resources. This site is particularly helpful for those just beginning to explore possible ways to link research with teaching and learning.

Bass, Randy. “The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: What’s the Problem?” Inventio 1.1 (1999). (archived at www.doiiit.gmu.edu/Archives/feb98/randybass.htm)

Bass asserts that part of SoTL means learning to think of problems in teaching in ways similar to our conceptions of problems in research—“changing the status of the problem in teaching from terminal remediation to ongoing investigation.” He offers examples of such reframing from his American Literary Traditions class. This is useful for faculty wanting to re-think their scholarly approach to teaching and learning.

Hutchings, Pat, ed. Ethics of Inquiry: Issues in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Menlo Park, CA: Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 2002.

Ethics of Inquiry provides seven cases meant to “name and illustrate some of the issues faced by scholars of teaching and learning, and to create a forum for discussing those issues from diverse points of view.” Cases come from different disciplinary and institutional contexts, each accompanied by three different responses to help show that there’s “no single right way to resolve the ethical dilemmas that arise when investigating classroom practice.” This is a valuable resource for groups of faculty engaging in SoTL to consider and discuss ethical issues in this work.

Weimer, Maryellen. Enhancing Scholarly Work on Teaching and Learning. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2006.

Weimar examines and reviews existing scholarly work on teaching and learning, and analyzes the various types of this literature (“wisdom of practice” and “research scholarship”) and methodologies used in examining and reflecting on teaching and learning. She includes advice to faculty engaging in pedagogical scholarship as well as for academic leaders hoping to support faculty engaged in SoTL.
